Bandwidth? A Basic Definition
The maximum amount of data that a connection can transmit in a given period of time, generally measured as bits per second (bps). A digital telephone line has a bandwidth of 64,000 bits per second (64 kbps). An analogue telephone line has a bandwidth equivalent to 9600 bps. However, the effective bandwidth of an analogue line can be increased by the attachment of a modem employing data compression. Also, the term is applied to part of the frequency spectrum; that part of the spectrum required for a specific purpose. The greater the bandwidth, the more information that can be sent through: e.g., a television channel occupies a bandwidth of up to 8 Megahertz, (Mhz), whereas a telephone conversation utilises only 4 kilohertz (kHz).
From: Communications
The capacity of the transmission medium stated in bits per second or as a frequency. The bandwidth of optical fiber is in the gigabit or billion bits per second range, while ethernet coaxial cable is in the megabit or million bits per second range.

The maximum amount of data that a connection can transmit in a given period of time, generally measured as bits per second (bit/s). A digital telephone line has a bandwidth of 64,000 bits per second (64 kbit/s). An analogue telephone line has a bandwidth equivalent to 9600 bits per second.
