Domain Name? A Basic Definition
1. A logical grouping, used to organize networked computers. On the Internet, the highest-level domain is the country; sub-domains, listed to the left and separated by dots, work through an increasingly specific hierarchy in order to identify a unique location, known as the 'domain name'. Reading from right to left is analogous to reading from the bottom to the top line of a postal address.
2. A domain name is a text name appended to a host name to form a unique host name across internets. DNS is Domain Name Server. Each web site has a DNS address which can be resolved back to an IP address. This is done when you for example follow a Hyper link. Your PC sends an ARP request across is LAN. If no address is received it is then sent out the default gateway. If the address is USR.Com then the ARP request is sent over various routers to the COM server. The ARP request asks the COM server "Do you know the IP address of the USR server?" if the answer is yes then the COM server sends back the IP address for USR.Com. If the server does not know the IP address the the ARP request is sent on to the other COM servers until either the request is resolved or the Time To Live value in the header exceeds its maximum.
